An amulet is special piece of jewellery, which is usually carried at a chain around the neck. This jewellery possesses already a long tradition and was used already in the antiquity as cult object and ornament. In the original use, amulets were used as protective symbols, to which a magic power is ascribed. Amulets should bring luck to their owners, protect them from harmful influences and be basically a power-giving companion. An amulet is connected today frequently directly with the carrying way as chain around the neck, it was carried also as so-called Talisman in figurative form in the clothes or placed in the house. In the non-Christian cultures amulets and talismans were produced and used in the most different forms: The Egyptians often depicted the scarab beetle and the horus eye was also popular. The ancient Chinese used perforated coins as protective amulets and the Thorshammer became a widespread talisman among the Germanic tribes. Although the Christian church defended itself against all superstitions, certain symbols spread in jewellery and cult objects. Thus, in Christianity, crosses, certain relics and also pilgrim signs are regarded as amulets. Today's understanding of an amulet is reflected in the current jewellery in the presence of symbolic pendants. Angel motifs, runic symbols and further spiritual elements are taken up here. Medallions also belong to the category of amulets. A medallion is a chain pendant that can be opened and closed. In addition, an individual content, which has a high emotional value, can usually be added to it. Jewellery lovers appreciate this possibility, because in this way personal mementos can always be carried with them. Favorite people thus find their place near the heart. The medallion as we know it today has existed since the 15th century and gained popularity especially in the 19th century. At that time it was usual to engrave the initials of the partner on the back. Usually there is a small picture of the partner, the children or the family in the medallion. A lock of the child's hair is also often added. In contrast to these traditional options, other small objects can also find their place in the pendant - for that pay attention to its size. For example, a dried flower could also be placed in the medallion - either one's own favourite flower or that of a loved one can be chosen here.
