The term crown jewels refers to particularly valuable pieces of jewellery in a royal collection. The crown jewels usually consist of the government insignia, among which the crown, the sceptre, the sword of the empire and the orb are the most important elements. Crown jewels are therefore not only specially cut gemstones, for which the term jewel is generally used, but include all the particularly valuable jewellery of a royal family. Today, the British Crown Jewels, which are kept in the Tower of London, are particularly well known. The British Crown Jewels are considered to be the most valuable jewellery collection in the world, which includes not only the elements made of gemstones and metals, but also special items of clothing (e.g. the robe of a king). In addition to the British Crown Jewels, the Danish Crown Jewels and the French Crown Jewels are also known to the public. As a rule, the use of these jewels, i.e. the wearing of certain parts of the crown jewels, is reduced to an extremely rare level, and the special pieces of jewellery are only worn on special occasions. For the British Crown Jewels, this applies to the annual opening of Parliament and the coronation ceremony of a new monarch.
