Matting is a process by which a surface is given a matt, lacklustre appearance. The wood or metal is thus deprived of its lustre. Of course, this can also be of interest for jewellery making, because jewellery does not always have to be brightly shiny to be of high quality and attractive. When matting wood, the raw material is coated with a so-called matt varnish; metal is matted by chemicals (stain) or mechanically with a sandblasting machine. Not only wood and metal can be matted, but also glass and textiles can be freed from annoying shine. Glass, like metal, is matted either by chemical etching or by mechanical sandblasting, while the sheen of textiles can be reduced by pigment deposition. For the production of understated jewellery that is less shiny and sparkly, matting is an indispensable step. In this way, even more diverse jewellery can be created.
