Byzantine Chain

Byzantine Chain
Byzantine Chain - A Byzantine chain is a piece of jewellery in which the chain does not consist of individual links and eyelets, but was always made of several. Therefore, Byzantine chains and Byzantine bracelets are usually relatively heavy, because the material was processed in dense space together to a coherent piece of jewellery. This is also accompanied by the compact shape of a Byzantine chain, which is characteristic for this type of jewellery. The numerous links from which such a chain is made are always processed in pairs by the goldsmith during the manufacturing process. In this complex process, the different pairs of links are turned, hooked in, fixed and also spread until the finished Byzantine chain with its unique appearance is finally created. Since this process is cumbersome, high-quality materials are usually used to give the necklace an appropriate value. If pieces of jewellery of this type are not heavy but relatively light, then, for example, no high-quality 585 gold alloy was used, but instead hollow round wire with a lower weight was used.
